Contribute to coccidial risk management

Norponin® XO

Saponines

Features

The power of saponins to manage coccidiosis

Norponin® XO is a premix of additives standardized in saponins from yucca and fenugreek

  • Contributes to coccidial risk management
  • Contained extracted saponins
  • Ensures against coccidiosis risk without withdrawal period
  • As efficient as chemical/fermentation coccidiostats
  • 100% natural
  • Usable in organic farming in Europe

Issues

Caused by Eimeria which is a highly contagious intestinal parasite, coccidiosis is a serious problem in particular in poultry production. Economic losses are caused by an increased feed conversion, a poorer growth and a higher mortality. In addition, coccidiosis can contribute to the outbreak of secondary infections, such as clostridiosis, responsible for necrotic enteritis. Besides the use of coccidiostats and of vaccines to control coccidiosis, botanicals can be a valuable and efficient alternative.

Composition

Patented combination of yucca and fenugreek saponins

Trial results

7 trials with experimentally induced coccidiosis were performed between 2016 and 2019: 2 in Europe (Belgium, Spain), 4 in America (3 in the USA, 1 in Peru) and one in Asia (Vietnam).

Each trial was conducted with an infected untreated control group (IUC, negative control), an infected group treated with coccidiostats (Crtl+, positive control), and an infected group with Norponin® XO supplementation.

With Norponin® XO supplementation, a significant reduction in intestinal lesions due to Eimeria acervulina (-25%), Eimeria maxima (-29%) and a numerical reduction in intestinal lesions due to Eimeria tenella (-20%) were observed (measured by the Johnson & Reid scale). In addition, an improvement in feed conversion rate, as well as an increase in average daily weight gain were observed. Due to a reduced mortality rate (data not shown), the increased performance parameters resulted in a significant improvement of the European Broiler Index (+7%, EBI) compared to the negative control. In addition, no significant difference was observed between birds receiving coccidiostats and birds supplemented with Norponin® XO.

Figure 1: Incidence of intestinal lesions caused by E.acervulina, E.maxima, and E.tenella in the negative control group (IUC, infected untreated control), the positive control group (Ctrl+, infected and treated with coccidiostats), and the infected group with Norponin® XO supplementation (Norponin® XO), scored using the Johnson&Reid scoring index (Johnson and Reid, 1970).

Figure 2: Collected performance parameters ADG (Average Daily Gain), FCR (Feed conversion ratio) and EBI (European Broiler Index, EBI= (ADG x Livability)/ (10 x FCR)).

Usage

Mode of action

  • 1

Saponins are secondary metabolites produced by several plants mainly as a defence mechanism against microbes, insects or drought.

  • 2

The selected saponins included in the Norponin XO will bind to the sterols present in the cell membranes of protozoa like Eimeria.

  • 3

Attached to the sterols, saponins can interact with each other leading to membrane degradation and lysis of the cell as result.

Various application

For poultry

Norponin XO can be used in full, in addition, or in shuttle or rotation programs. As Norponin XO is a natural product there is no withdrawal period.
